Maintenance of the Coffee Plantillos - Application of compost & fertilisers

Picture:
Another task in maintaining the plantillos involves the application of compost and other fertilisers. As with weed&pest control we are continuously looking for methods to add the necessary nutrients to the soil without using damaging products to the plants and environment. We use compost developed at the farm using coffee by-products such as the pulp of the coffee, as well as cow manure from the stables. Please refer to the sustainability section of the Selva Negra website for more detail on these efforts. We have build a few large compost bins. We make about 1000 tons of compost a year. This is made out of different debris from the farm and hotel, such as coffee pulp, cow manure, chicken manure, garbage from the workers houses and the hotel, algae from the hotel lake, rice husk, green pruning, mulch, etc. We also use the worm farm as another source of compost this is done with coffee pulp and another with cow manure. Last year we made about 300 tons of organic fertilizer to be used at the coffe plantation.
