The coffee plantation is one
of the places that most benefits from all the sustainable projects
at Selva Negra. It receives benefits from the top soil that is
created from the manure of the stables and the cattle ranch.
The organic fertilizer that is made up of all the waste in all
the divisions of the estate from the rotten fruit in the fruit
patch, to the leftovers in the resort and employee kitchens.
The coffee plantation also benefits from the mulch that is created
from the prunings of the gardens at the resort and the trees
in the plantation itself.
We believe that much of the
quality of the Selva Negra coffee is due to the sustainable works
at the plantation. We find it very important to return to the
soil as many nutrients as possible. One of the projects that
we are currently trying to undertake is purchasing manure from
many of the cattle ranches in Nicaragua to use throughout the
estate. We have found that there is no need for use of pesticides
or herbices in the plantillos where we have been using manure
as top soil for a couple of seasons. This, of course, goes a
long way to our efforts of converting the entire estate to organic
coffee. |
